Class: From Word One
Four Weeks Starting February 2
OnlineThe Becoming Arts Collective presents: "From Word One." A course by Robert J. LeBlanc.
Learn the fundamentals of dramatic writing and end the course with a ready-to-submit-to-festivals 10-minute play. Taught by award-winning playwright Robert J. LeBlanc, the class uses the short-play format as a practical, accessible way to learn how plays work, from the first moment of conflict to a clear, satisfying ending.
Students will explore core elements of playwriting, including character, objective, conflict, dialogue, structure, and theatrical storytelling, all within the discipline of a tightly limited length. Through guided exercises, supportive workshops, and improvisational theater techniques, participants will draft, revise, and complete an original 10-minute play while developing tools they can apply to longer works.
By working in a compressed format, writers learn how to make strong choices quickly, build momentum, and write scenes that are playable and engaging for actors and audiences. Drawing on his experience in mystery, comedy, and character-driven drama, LeBlanc emphasizes clarity, boldness, and craft, encouraging students to trust their instincts while learning professional techniques.
This course is ideal for beginners and emerging writers, as well as actors, directors, and storytellers who want a hands-on introduction to playwriting through a form that is both challenging and highly producible.

About Robert J LeBlanc:
Robert J. LeBlanc, (Bob LeBlanc to his Balderdash Academy friends) is an internationally produced, award-winning playwright, actor, voice actor, and artist. He is the producer and head writer of the comedy ensemble Balderdash Academy, the owner and lead writer of the interactive mystery-comedy company Sleuths Mystery Entertainment, and a series developer and writer on Realm’s hit horror series Undertow: Blood Forest and Undertow: Pulse. Writing across multiple genres, his work is rooted in comedy and the use of humor within dramatic storytelling.
